Promotional Gifts – How to Choose the Perfect Gift For Your Potential Client!

It’s easy for a business to get lost in the crowd- With millions of businesses out there all competing for clientele, you have to find a way to make your company stand out from the rest. Whether prospective clients are visiting your location or stopping by your booth at a trade show, they actually don’t want to hear your song and dance about how you’re the best in the business. So how do you keep them interested and make them remember you? Easy. Give out Promotional Gifts!

While deciding to give out Promotional Gifts is easy, picking what item to give can be overwhelming! There are hundreds of products to choose from, so here are a few things you should keep in mind before you order ten thousand pens with your name on them…

1. The first question you’ll want to ask yourself is ‘who is my potential client’ and ‘what product are they most interested in.’ The more you target the specific needs of your potential buyer, the better your Promotional Gift will be received. Be aware of the age group and economical bracket of your target client. Promotional pens have always been the most popular, and in many cases work. However, younger people tend to be more receptive to a flashy pen with a cool logo on the side than a very wealthy CEO who only writes with expensive, classy pens.

2. The next thing to consider is if the potential buyer is interested in your company as a shareholder. If so, a lifestyle gift is generally more appropriate. As in golf balls or tees, small appliances or computer accessories.

3. If you know what specific item or service your potential buyer might be interested in, that can be a big help. Use that knowledge to try and find a Promotional Gift item that directly relates to the product they are coming to you for. In other words, give them something you know they will use and appreciate, and of course have your company logo and slogan conveniently placed on it too!

4. Another thing you want to keep in mind is how much money your potential client will be spending with you. If they plan to spend several thousand dollars on your services, giving them a plastic keychain with your name on it seems unfitting. With big spending clients, you want to give a Promotional Gift that fits how much they have invested in you, such as a cappuccino maker for their office, a nice golf bag for them to enjoy on days off, maybe a gift of wine, or a laptop backpack…

The best way to make your Promotional Gifts work for you is to know when and how to distribute them. While larger gifts are appropriate for potentially larger clients and current clients, smaller gifts are very fitting at trade shows, or as free gifts with online purchases, for referring a friend, or for signing up on a mailing list. Items such as golf towels, mugs, hats, and t-shirts can generally be purchased at a relatively low cost but will be well received by a buyer. There are hundreds of items to choose from, so no matter what your business, you can find something right for you. A Promotional Gift will keep your company on your clients’ mind. They will naturally think of you every time they use the product, so the next time they need your services, you’ll be the first one they think of!

Are You Writing a Tender Or Proposal and Want to Differentiate Your Company From the Competition?

You are hard at work writing your tender or proposal in the hope of winning that big new contract, but you know that you have at least one, if not more, big competitor. You’d like to differentiate your company and make it seem much better than them. You’ve also got some great products that are better than their as well. So how do you do this and win that great bid?

Well first of all look at your business and then specifically at the products and services that you are offering. You then need to look at your prices, fulfillment and support. Lastly look at the staff that will be working on the project and supporting the new service or system. Here are a few questions to ask yourself in order for you to list how much greater your business and bid is than all the others?

Look at your business compared to theirs?
1) Is your business larger or more dominant than your competitor’s?
2) Are your products better, more well-known or better marketed than your competitor’s?
3) Have you been in business longer and are more established?
4) Is your brand image more prominent or has a better reputation?
5) Are you more local to your potential customer?
6) Are your prices and price break points better than theirs?
7) Do you offer a better range of payment methods or option?
8) Do you offer better payment discounts than they do?
9) Do you fulfill orders quicker than they do?
10) Do you have better incentives than they do?
11) Do you have better products and product ranges than they do?
12) Do you have better customer, maintenance and sales support?
13) Is your fulfillment faster or better than the competitor’s?
14) Do you install or build things faster?
15) Do you have “first to the market” or latest technology advantage?

Look at your services, product and staff.
16) Identify the features you have that they don’t have. What features are better in yours?
17) What statistics do you have on your product that you can use to show your uniqueness or superiority?
18) What physical or emotional needs/desires/requirements does your product meet that theirs does not?
19) Is your product more up to date, modern or technically advanced?
20) Does your product last longer than the competitor’s?
21) Are your products; bigger, smaller, faster, slower, more robust, higher etc?
22) Are your staff more highly trained or do you have one or more subject experts?
23) What type of customer support are you going to offer and how does it differ from your competitor?
24) Do you offer a special type of professional advice or support that they don’t? If so, what?
25) How is your confidentiality different than your competitors?

Once you’ve worked through these you should be able to write some great paragraphs showing how great your business, staff and products are. If you can’t write great prose – then be brave and bullet point your great points. Any way – good luck on wining your bid.

What to Give As A Corporate Gift

Corporate gifts can be given for many reasons, from thanking a faithful customer to celebrating a promotion or anniversary to more private celebrations like the birth of an employee’s child or their new marriage. Deciding when to give a corporate gift is as easy as noticing a special event, from an anniversary of employment to a particularly tricky project having been successfully navigated.

What can get challenging is deciding what to give employees for these kinds of landmarks, and this is where things can indeed get tricky if you are not careful of your choices. For example, when giving out gifts at work for semi-common milestones like five and ten year anniversaries, you have to be careful not to unintentionally (or intentionally) show favoritism by giving out many different gifts that could be perceived as better or worse. Instead, think about buying a batch of corporate gifts like a set of nice clocks. That way you will always be able to hand out the same gift for the same milestone for all of your employees.

For something less common, such as promotions, a standard gift like a business card holder might be just fine, but you can also get away with personalizing the gift a little more. You can take a little bit more of a risk and present them privately with a bottle of wine or other spirits, or you can make their corporate gift something special to them or to the position to which they are moving within the company.

With customers, the chance of hurting the feelings of those not receiving gifts is minimized, and the gifts can become more (or less) extravagant, and can be extremely personalized from contact to contact depending on what you want to convey and how valuable each customer is to you and to your business. This level of personalization is a great relief because you can feel free to spend as much or as little on each customer as you feel that customer merits without being concerned about favoritism or jealousy. You can give anything from a decent but inexpensive watch to a fine crystal paperweight or just about anything in between.

There are many options for promotional gifts, and these can range from alcohol, which should not be given lightly, to plaques, very nice pens or stationary sets, or beer mugs filled with candies or other small items. You can give out watches or clocks, or more off the wall gifts like joke gift sets or other corporate gifts. The choices are wider, even, than the reasons to give them, and allow for a great deal of selection and personalization.

The best corporate gifts are either personalized to the situation or are highly office friendly, making things like alcohol, candles, or bath sets very risky gifts to give since they can send the wrong impression. The best bet is to make sure that the gifts come from the company, and are appropriate to have at work, too.

Women Excel As Home Business Entrepreneurs

Without backup statistics to support my view, it’s an off the top guess that women are leading the workforce in starting, managing and owning a home business. The opportunities are expanding rapidly across America in the home business arena. Many firms today are encouraging employees to spend part of their work week in a home office. Computers have opened new doors for virtual assistants, many are working for one or more clients in different parts of the country without difficulty.

Our example of how new ideas surface is only one of many. A simple search on Google will open many possibilities beyond our imagination for a home business. Articles are written and available free for the asking on nearly any subject you can think up. Often, more than one author has shared his/her own experiences, expertise and knowledge. [EzineArticles.com has tens of thousands on their website]

A group of 30-50 something women play cards, drink coffee, visit wine clubs for fun. However, the real purpose/benefit of their weekly get together is to share ideas. Some of the women have children at home or in school which is a huge responsibility. Others in the group are free to come and go as they please, no attachments to interfere with travel , vacations to exotic places, cruises and more.

Recently, an idea surfaced with a lot of interest, especially for moms with young children. Usually, ideas surface because of a problem. As most moms know, if the kids see a toy advertised on TV mom will buy it simply to avoid the pouting and sad faces. None of us like to see unhappy kids when it’s within our means to make their day. Once the toy gets home and played with it loses its appeal and ends up in the corner with all the other junk bought over many yesterdays.

New toys or something out of the ordinary are always a hit at birthday parties. Unfortunately, most of us can’t buy expensive toys that end up being used only one time. Chances are pretty good that other mothers are facing similar problems with their children’s annual party with friends, too. Maybe the group is hitting on a solution to fix some difficulties faced by many mothers and dads across America.

From this personal knowledge and experience an idea was born. After bringing a few mothers together to discuss challenges with their kids, an idea surfaced about the possibility of setting up a rental store offering exclusive and expensive toys on one and two day rental terms. Obviously, the benefit to the mothers is less expense for the same party toys that are too expensive to purchase for one use.

Every Business Idea Requires Careful Scrutiny

Once you hit on a good idea, do not rush in without first evaluating your idea strategically. Ask yourself lots of pertinent questions. What if? How much money? How many hours? Do I have the skills and the talent required to be a business owner? At home or in an office downtown makes very little difference beyond the nice convenience of working 24/7 at home Vs an 8 hour shift downtown.

Running a business from home is not all peaches and le.crème. Look around and notice the coming in and going out of your family members. How will this impact your work? Personal telephone calls? What are your children doing after school? Only you can evaluate the challenges based on your own family and their involvement in athletics, singing lessons, piano lessons and more. You can add the more.

Understand, you are not the first person with a home business idea. You’ve discovered an old problem faced by tens of thousands of mothers before you ever thought about motherhood. Is it possible that another mom abandoned a similar project in her town or city? Wonder why, ask for details. Nothing is easy or without challenge dealing with the public.

Our passions will often take over common sense causing us to overlook the weaknesses of our great ideas. So much of our potential success will depend on location, location, location. It’s not likely that you can run a rental store in your home or neighborhood. Restrictive guidelines to operate a business are usually found at your local business license bureau. Ask about fees, inspections, whatever applies to your new business is important to know BEFORE you waste a lot of money for nothing.

Aspiring entrepreneurs are running home businesses with great success. It’s certainly possible that you will do the same. Our only admonition is to take the time for a careful due diligence. Profits are not automatic for any of us. It takes long hours and wise decisions. Good luck with yours.

Effective Conversation Starters For Work and Business

While gatherings of friends or family members can seem a relaxing, easy going time where conversation flows like wine, the same approach won’t cut it in the board room. When trying to start conversations with clients and coworkers, you need to adjust your methods for a more professional environment, ensuring discourse that is elevated beyond casual conversation, but that is not so stuffy as to inhibit familiarity. Here are a few tips to starting effective conversations in work and business environments.

SOLICIT A COLLEAGUE’S THOUGHTS
Chances are you and your coworkers are working on numerous, unique projects that would benefit from sharing data or problem-solving from a fresh point-of-view. Bring up some aspect of a project that you may be stuck on, or are uncertain about. These kinds of discussions tend to be excellent conversation starters as both you and your counterpart embark on a (hopefully) fruitful exchange of ideas and concerns. This also gives your conversation partner a great opportunity to share his or her own problems with their own work, and solicit your advice.

FIND A FUNNY OR AMUSING ANECDOTE
When meeting with an important client, try to diffuse the initial tension by telling a funny (but tasteful) joke, or relate an amusing story that happened to you or someone you know recently. Try to avoid making any jokes about the matter you and the client will be discussing, however, as it will likely make you seem unnecessarily cavalier and indicate to your client that you are not taking his business seriously. In fact, try to keep any tension cutters off of the subject of business, because the idea behind such a tactic is to get everyone’s mind off of the impending meeting momentarily and to diffuse any anxieties.

OVERALL PERFORMANCE
Discussing the general performance of your company with your coworkers is often a great way to not only start a good conversation, but to learn things you did not previously know about the state of the company, and these conversations also allow you and your coworkers to form a sense of teamwork and camaraderie amid in the knowledge of your collective fates.

OFF-HOURS ACTIVITIES
Often the easiest way to kick off a conversation with coworkers or clients is simply to ask how their weekend went, or what they did after work the night before. Such questions offer a great way to everyone’s minds off of work or business for a while, and forge bonds on subjects beyond your shared business lives.

How to Learn From Others

As a fan of creative communication and problem solving, I enjoy paying tribute to other people’s cool ideas. I don’t know always know exactly who I’m honoring with the examples below, but here are 5 Cool Ideas that rock.

1. Customers love to have a choice.
Their are two main ways to navigate the Dallas-Fort Worth airport by car. You can go around it at no cost and it will cost you a few minutes or you can drive through and it will cost you a few bucks. You may not be a fan of tolls, but you’ve got to admit this is a clever way to create revenue.

2. Creative ideas make people smile.
There’s an enterprising shoeshine man at the Gaylord Texan Resort. He offers three price points for his simple service, all with glamorous names. Not one of them is called the “basic shine.” The most expensive shine gets you a glass of wine. Now, that’s creative marketing!

3. Avoid “tradition unimpeded by progress.”
Have you noticed that many t-shirts no longer have a label sewn into the back of the neck? Instead, the garment information is screened into the fabric. Brilliant! Cereal boxes are now missing the expensive tongue-in-groove box top in favor of a less expensive tuck-in flap.

4. Old service models can almost always be improved.
TSA at some airports have figured out how to free the bottleneck in security lanes by having two conveyor belt lines share a metal detector walkway. This is less expensive because TSA uses less personnel and less equipment. It’s faster for us, too.

5. Create products and services from thin air.
A while back, I spoke at a conference where a woman took several excellent photographs of me. The shots were posted on a board later and a single snapshot was priced at $7. I asked why the pic was so expensive and was told that I was purchasing the photograph and the rights to it. Clever!

The Power, and Danger, of Your Database

One of my clients is a land developer in an executive lake front community. The homes are $750,000 – $1.5 million dollar custom built beauties.

We were brought in to “be” their marketing department. To most outsiders, our firm looks like we are actually employees.

The reason we were brought in was their past marketing manager.

She got fired.

For a VERY good reason.

This was a person who acted as if the company was her own, and as if she was not accountable at all for marketing funds.

When I first started digging around, it was very evident that this person loved to spend the companies’ money – without any thought to results.

Ads being run in newspapers and magazines that DEFINITELY did not target the right demographics.

Radio spots being run on stations that 18 year old skateboarders listen to (how many of them do you think will buy a million dollar home?)

A website that looks pretty but is seriously lacking good quality content. The one VERY good thing they have on the site is a form to fill out for more information

…but this is part of the big problem.

People were filling this form out – and NEVER hearing back from anyone.

I tried to find all their databases.

“Data what?”

No one had a clue on where the databases were – or even what they were.

After a month I managed to compile a list of ~ 2,000 interested prospects that had either been to the website and filled out the form… attended an event… phoned in or visited the information centre… or had expressed some form of interest at one point.

Remember – these are people who have not heard a word back from the developer – some of them filled the form out a year or more ago!

First thing I did was send an apology letter to everyone on the database. Imagine the shock the staff had when I told them we have to apologize for being so tardy (and downright dumb) about lack of follow up.

Then I invited them all to 2 parties coming up.

Then I sent an email as well – giving more information and reasons to attend.

The first was a VIP party held on Wednesday night. It turned out fabulous! We had ~80-100 people show up and were very happy to hear from us and see all the progress being made. We served them top quality wine, cheeses, and bread. We gave them leather bound information packages with a ton of content and information inside. We gave out prizes. We had a Harley on display – alongside a 1967 Mustang.

We treated them special.

And they ate it up.

The problem though is the responses I got back from the email list.

People replied back saying they waited and waited – but never heard back and ended up buying elsewhere. At least 10 of those responses (let’s see now – 10 people x $1,000,000 homes = $10,000,000 down the drain!).

People called me names – some nasty.

Overall, people were very thankful.

Which leads me to the whole point of this article…

You MUST collect leads from interested party – but even more important is you MUST follow up with them. If people express their interest – the job is at least 50% done. Then it is in effective follow up to close the deal.

This company neglected this database – and even worse, neglected these peoples trust.

It will be interesting to see what we can do with some effective follow up.

From what I have seen so far – simple letters and emails will help sell million dollar home sales. Of course it will take more than just that – but most people were very happy to get emails and print letters from us.

I will keep you updated on the progress of this project – it is a fun one.

Remember, keep a database – and follow up with them! Invite them to special events. Give them gifts. Treat them like gold. And follow up with them again, and again, and again.

You are criminally neglecting these people if you take their names and do nothing with them.

The sad part?

This client is much like 95% of the companies out there in existence today.

Which is why it doesn’t take much to stand out from the crowd as people are sadly quite used to this kind of neglect?

Be the one that does pay attention.

And be the one who shows them that you DO care about their business.

Come and Stay – BC Summer Activities

Whether you enjoy relaxing with a glass of wine in your hand or challenging yourself to the rigours of rock-climbing, BC summer activities provide something for your. Tour the province to witness for yourself a breathtaking variety of eco-systems including desert, rain forest and meadow. Hire a houseboat, kayak or bicycle so you can get close to the wonders others have only read about in tourist brochures.

These wonders include the marvelous animal life one can spot with a little patience and research. Whale watching from Vancouver Island or northern BC provides a popular attraction. Pods of Orcas travel from Alaska to Mexico each year, so find a guide or just spend some time in the water in a pleasure craft or ride the Ferry from Twassen to the Island. You might see a whale without even trying. Bears offer a similar attraction, these beautiful creatures who remind us of our teddy bears yet possess a strength you do not want to mess with. On the other hand, bears rarely approach humans. In fact, they prefer a solitary life. Find a hide from which to view their salmon-catching antics or travel Highway One. Your best opportunity of seeing a bear is by watching the road. They appear out of nowhere, only to disappear into the bushes once more like ghosts.

Explore aquatic scenery and a rugged coastline around Vancouver and further north up the channel in a sea kayak. This affords another chance to get close to whales and marine birds. Hire a kayak inland and explore lakes such as Postil, Hidden Lake and Gardom Lake, all in the Shuswap and Okanagan.

While in that region, play eighteen holes at The Harvest Golf Club in Kelowna before heading to one of numerous wineries. These include Tinhorn Creek, a carbon neutral winery boasting a fabulous product. For a wine festival come in August to the Okanagan Summer Wine Festival held at Silver Star Mountain near Vernon. Other festivals include Roots and Blues with its eclectic mix of musical acts held in Salmon Arm annually.

There is little mystery as to what brought people to places like Salmon Arm or Barkerville. Gold, building the railway, farming: these were all important attractions for immigrants from other parts of the country or from Europe. Visit places like Three Valley Gap near Revelstoke to see restored buildings such as the general store, the smithy or the one room school house. Some places even feature costumed actors and re-enactments of court proceedings.

Royal BC Museum is a large and fascinating establishment where visitors can explore the changing shape of the province. Take a look at natural history, indigenous cultures, the progress of the railroad and more. Other museums to check out include the Canadian Military Education Centre in Chilliwack, near Vancouver. Explore the military history of the country with some hands on displays and historic machines.

River rafting is just one of the many water-sports attracting those who love to experience the wildness of provincial waterways. Choose your timing carefully to get the highest class of rapids or a gentler ride. Your fastest water in summer will likely happen early in the season, not long after the heavy spring run-off. Look into Adams River or Thomspon River tour companies, or just take yourself out onto one of numerous lakes for tubing and water-skiing.

Rock climbing makes another popular attraction for those unafraid of heights. Combine your interest in natural scenery with some vertical exertion. Once at the top of the cliffs at Skaha Bluffs near Penticton or Liard River in northern BC, do a bit of bird watching and let the world go by way below you.
