Tips to Avoid the Pitfalls of Christmas Shopping

Shopping for Christmas gifts can either be pleasurable or stressful and the deciding factor is most often centered on knowing what to get for your loved ones, or if you are just meander pointlessly in a quest for inspiration. Hence, to shun yourself from stress, a so-called “prior gift planning” pays dividends and assts in the reduction of the holiday stress that you must cope with.

It certainly helps to begin your Christmas shopping conquest by preparing a detailed list of those people you want to buy presents for. It fixates the mind and will also benefit you in terms of budgeting. As soon as you know the number of your recipients, you can then apportion the funds accordingly. At this point, you will have a better idea of the type of presents you should be looking for. Moreover, you will have a rough estimation or price range for each item on your list. It isn’t acquisitive at all to consider this. Besides, it is rational and practical measure, as that joy that radiates from Christmas can even make the most penny-wise person lose control of his/her finances festive months.

Once the budget is settled, it is wiser to not set off to buy the presents until you have a few ideas for each recipient. Even if you are planning to complete your shopping offline, utilize the internet to search Christmas gift sites to have an idea of what can be purchased and just what the price ranges are. If you feel comfortable with online shopping, you can save a large amount of time and at the same time open up a world of gifts that you may not have given notice. To minimize postage fees, check out items for the entire gift list before making orders because some of these presents may be ordered from the same company.

To determine what gifts to check out, do a careful analysis of each recipient and what you know about their personalities. An important rule to remember is to get them gifts that they are sure to appreciate, rather than something you like yourself!

Begin your thoughts on those you know well. This will be much easier and the ideas that spark may aid you in thinking of things for those you find it harder to buy gifts for. If you happen to know someone very well, avoid gifts for the home, as personal fondness vary a lot in this area. A lavish treat or ‘occasion’ present can be an awesome choice though, as they don’t demand the recipient to put them on display for a long time months to avoiding hurting your feelings. Say you know someone who likes to cook, a gift basket of exotic spices and cooking oils will likely be well received, plus your recipient need not be a chocoholic to admire a the beauty of a handmade Belgian chocolates, so these kinds of make gift ideas make great choices.

In spite of our digital awareness, traditional pastimes such as board games still provide great pleasure whenever received as a Christmas present and fit well for friends and relatives. In addition, these make fabulous shared presents for a couple or family.

Lastly, still part of your gift planning, whenever there is a possibility that you might perhaps be invited to visit friends over the holidays that you haven’t seen for some time, consider buying small token gift items such as books, wine, or tree decors. Have these wrapped with a blank gift tag. In this way, you will always be prepared to offer a little gift if you need it unexpectedly.

What to Buy Your Wife This Christmas

There is one woman in every man’s life that has his heart and his hearth. She gives him comfort, joy and progeny and deserves only the best, whatever the occasion. Still, buying a gift for this special woman seems like a daunting task to many men.

Getting a gift for your wife is not as tough as it seems and this Christmas, win her heart again by purchasing a special gift for her. For every occasion, jewellery always delights a woman. A ring for her finger, a bracelet for her wrist or a delicate necklace to put around her neck are enchanting gifts. This gift can never grow old, and I would advise next year to buy a pretty trinket for your wife again.

Another gift that no woman has ever said no to is a pretty handbag. Either buy her a casual bag to carry to work or the supermarket, or buy a chic clutch or a formal bag for those special evenings out. On another note, pamper your wife and get her a gift certificate to a spa or a salon. Treat her to a new hairstyle, manicure, and pedicure. That would make her feel really special. Also indulge in her sweet fantasies and get a chocolate or exotic fruit gift basket for her. Vintage wine is also sure to please.

But before you pay up for any of these luxuries, consider if there is something your wife has wanted for some time now. Has she been nagging you about getting a new dishwasher, clothes drier, iron, or a plumber (just kidding)? Then, this is the perfect moment to get that home appliance for her. Take care that she has actually asked for it though – a new vacuum for Christmas, if it has not been specifically requested, might not go down too well!

Also, if your wife has no help and you see that the children are taking a toll on her nerves, why not get a nanny for her this Christmas and show her how important her wellbeing is to you. Repainting your bedroom, purchasing a new couch or getting a new carpet for her (and your) room are also sensible gifts that she can use and appreciate too.

Formal apparel can also be a good Christmas gift for your wife, as well as a new pair of shoes that she has been sighing over for a long time. Cashmere sweaters would also make your better half beam. Then, you can also get her really cute gifts like a reusable jar full of reasons why you love her printed on small pieces of coloured paper, funny refrigerator magnets, or a charm bracelet with a charm for all your special and lovely memories. She would also enjoy receiving a bath gift set with bath confetti and lotions. You may also buy a luxury towel set in a basket or a new bathrobe that she can use.

Whatever you get her though, make sure you tell her how special she is and how much she means to you. A gift coupled with this comment would no doubt make this Christmas one in a million for her.

Happy Holidays – Keeping Your Home Safe for Your Family

As we approach and anticipate yet another season of cheer and merriment, we take this moment to remind us all that while we can enjoy the festivities, we need to be responsible to ourselves, to each other, and to those with whom we share the road or airways. Follow these suggestions to make your holiday celebration fun and safe.

Some of us this year are new parents (or grandparents) – take care in how you place the tree and decorations; the view from your 9-month old’s perspective is much different than yours. Take those extra precautions, such as anchoring the tree, guarding or repositioning any plugged-in cords on the floor, keeping those pretty lights with their “chewable” cord beyond the reach of small fingers and small teeth or gums, placing glass ornaments somewhere other than the lower branches, using your fireplace with a screen, and others.

As we all look forward to the addition of that extra 10 pounds of holiday cheer, be careful in how you prepare and for how long you leave food out and unattended. I’d rather fight the extra 10 pounds in January than lose an additional 10 pounds to the “gastro-intestinal disorders” of disagreeable bacteria that also feel festive during or after the party.

Parties can be a great time of family and friends celebrating the season and the new year. But, don’t drink alcohol on an empty stomach and don’t drink and drive. In addition to the dangers of innocent people being hurt or killed due to our negligence, did you also know that many states have very strict enforcement of DUI laws, particularly during the holidays? For example, in some places if you are stopped for DUI (whether involved in an accident or not), you will:

* Likely get chafed wrists, since you will be arrested, hand-cuffed,
and taken to jail

* Be fingerprinted, photographed, and locked up

* Spend a minimum of 8 hours in jail and not released until
guaranteed sober

* Automatically have your license suspended for 7 days

* If convicted by a judge in court, have license suspended for up to 12 months, depending on the current “holiday spirit” of the judge

* Have DUI conviction on DMV record for 10 years, which will also cause your insurance rates to go up.

Keep in mind, one 1-oz shot of whiskey equals one 5-oz glass of wine, which equals one 12-oz glass of beer. They are all equal in alcohol content. Any one of these drinks will raise the average blood-alcohol level by 0.02, meaning an average sized person only needs 4 drinks in ONE hour to be at a 0.08 BAC. This level causes you to be legally intoxicated!

The key to merriment this season is to enjoy it responsibly – to yourself, your family, your friends, and to all others with whom you share the planet. So, whether traveling or staying “in-state,” have a great holiday as we continue to hope for Peace on Earth, Goodwill Toward Men!

Gosh, What Will I Do This Christmas!

No matter what one says, Christmas is great and every loves it. It gradually grows on you… if you know what I mean. I just thought of buying presents, decorations, roast turkey and other things but that’s about it – never built up on that and now, it’s the second day of December and I am panicking. Just a few weeks to go and what have I done, what will be the Dinner, what will I do for the guests and above all what am I going to do for the presents, I haven’t bought anything as yet and there seems to be no time at all. Gosh am I late! No, I don’t think it’s very late, there is still time, if I organise things for myself I know I will be fine.

Actually its better I might get some better deals with the new VAT rates in UK and with more competitive pricing done by retailers.

Therefore my dear disorganised friends; you don’t have to worry much, the World Wide Web has given us the luxury of being lazy and still getting things done on time. There is online shopping which will sort us out this Christmas as well. There is a massive range of last minute gifts at one place so you don’t need to spend ages looking around for the perfect present.

If you’re planning to buy something for the kids there are loads and loads of stuff available, hope you don’t get confused with what to buy. Keep an eye on the Remote Controlled toys, they are nice and kids just love them. Please be aware that some of the grown ups might end up fighting for them.

The biggest concern that I have is what to do for the Christmas party, one thing is decided, we are not going out this time, one it’s too expensive and two our previous two years have been at places which we too crowded. This year it’s going to be home-sweet-home. Hmmm…., organising and making a Christmas Party successful is not an issue with me any more, there are so many things that can be done….

You can now buy a range of party games for every age group and taste. There are games which the kids would love and then there are those for the family. Grand dads and the toddlers can all have fun together. There are games for us grownups, games which bring some banter and loads of fun with them. Actually organising a party and making is successful should not be a concern for anyone at all.

Actually the dinner is also sorted… at least from the decoration side. There are placement mats, which one can go for, there are some good variety of clocks and decoration items and there are some very pleasingly priced mats and stuff which look very trendy and fashionable. Wine Thermometer, Invisible Shelf and others are some things which are worth considering.

How often has it happened that we give a Christmas Card to our dear ones and after sometime it disappears. All the effort that we took to think and write a nice message is wasted. This Christmas, there should be some consideration given to the Carve Your Own Wooden Card. I am going to put in a little bit of extra effort and going to convey a message that will last forever. This is one thing which I think is a must have in my Christmas List….I am going to get it no matter what and am going to tell someone very special what I really feel. I can’t say that it will be as good as a Rose, but I am sure it will carry a similar message. It doesn’t get much more romantic than that.

Next on the list, some stuff for the “Carbon footprint folks” I know. They will get the eco-friendly gifts this time. Solar powered gadgets can be one good thing for the guys or solar powered mobile phone chargers for the ladies especially when it is in pink. There can be some re-cycled stuff also for the Geeky lads that are there!

Can’t leave the grown-ups. Dads and lads of all ages go absolutely crazy for the Remote Controlled stuff that is around. Keep an eye on the Indiana Jones Giant Ant, this is something that is new this year and I can see him crawling like a baby running after it. Remote Controlled Helicopters are another thing which is going to bring out the child from within the Daddy.

Remember Christmas should not be a quite evening that we want to spend, the fun of Christmas Day is when there are kids shouting at the top of their voices with excitement as they open their presents, fights and screams that come for some party game going around somewhere in the house, a highly competitive game happening between the children and granny or the lads shouting loud like kids playing with a toy and trying to bring the roof down. That is what is Christmas all about and that is how it should be. So go online and do a few clicks and your Christmas will be a memorable one, you should not worry about time but should start thinking about pouring yourself a cup of Christmas cheer.

Christmas Party This Weekend

This weekend is our annual Christmas party and due to retirement of a colleague I have been given the task of planning the event. I’m not sure if this is a blessing or a curse as it seems I have officially become the office party planner not a role I applied for. I have been given the world’s smallest budget and a box of Christmas decorations dating back to the 1970′s. So I figure there are 5 important steps to a party and have decided to tackle them as such:

Step 1: Location

This one was easy, as with little money and a big warehouse at my disposal. The obvious solution was a warehouse party much to the warehouse manager’s disapproval.

Step 2: Decorations

With such a small budget, I didn’t think spending money on new decorations was the best idea. So I decided to run with the old 70′s ones we had. However with one simple but interesting addition I am going to borrow the projector from the meeting room and connect it to my laptop, then find various videos on TouTube and had them running projected onto the wall.

Step 3: Music

I personally think that music is an extremely important part of any party but the little radio we have in the office was never going to fill our warehouse. I have No Idea about sound I don’t even have a digital radio and I’m not exactly sure what 5.1 means on DVDs. So I started searching the web to find a company to supply a DJ and the necessary equipment. After a few calls and some prices that made me think I was buying the equipment not renting! I found a company and explained what I was arranging and they worked out what we needed and are even sending someone round to set everything up. The best part is that I still have around 150GBP left in my budget.

Step 4: Drinks

With only GBP150 I decided to make this a bring your own bottle party, I know it’s a bit of a bad place to start a party but with the current economic situation I figured most of us are happy just to have jobs. I have received one or two moans about this but hey what’s a bottle of wine these days 5GBP I don’t think it’s much to ask.

Step 5: Food

So food is where I have decided to spend my remaining budget, after all what’s a party with nothing to eat? I don’t want to do the same old thing of light snacks and nibbles its boring. So I thought of ordering pizza, ordering curries and then it dawned on me I have a Panini maker! So armed with the companies cash and carry card I set off this morning to buy whatever I could to create a “make your own Panini station”. I got loads of good stuff including 2kg of cooked chicken for 10GBP and 2kg bags of cheese that place is amazing, I even managed to get some giant chocolate cakes.

So with the food bought and DJ booked all I have to do now is set it all up and find videos on YouTube I hope there is a log fire one.

Top 15 Healthy Tips for Managing Diabetes During the Holidays

The holiday season can be one of the most enjoyable times of the year, but it can also bring with it unique challenges if you’re dealing with type 2 diabetes. Most social events this time of year (and really all year) revolve around food and drinks, and typically sweets and alcoholic beverages at that.

You’re also likely to be even busier than normal with social gatherings, holiday cooking and baking, decorating and shopping for gifts. Add in house guests from out of town and get-togethers with family members you may not always get along with, and it’s a recipe for high stress and burnout.

Fortunately, with a little planning and perseverance, you can enjoy the holidays and stay on top of your diabetes. The tips that follow are an excellent guide you can keep with you for this season and many more to come.

Top 15 Holiday Tips for Diabetics

1. Try to Maintain Your Routine

It’s easy to get sidetracked during the holidays, but be sure you’re still setting aside time for your regular meal planning and preparations. This way you’ll be less likely to be tempted by fast-food fixes for dinner or to skip your workout in favor of a last-minute shopping trip.

2. Make Exercise a Priority

Regular exercise is essential if you have diabetes, and this is true during the holiday season just like the rest of the year. Schedule your exercise sessions into your day like any other important appointment, and make a commitment that your exercise “appointments” cannot be broken.

3. Learn to Say No

If you’re feeling overwhelmed with too many social or work obligations, try to simplify your schedule by saying no. You don’t have to attend every holiday event that you’re invited to, and often you may get a renewed sense of energy and optimism by opting out of an invite and getting to bed early for a night instead.

4. Eat Before the Party

Whenever you know you’ll be going to a place with lots of tempting foods, be sure you fill up on healthy foods beforehand. This will make it much less likely that you’ll overeat or binge on sweets at the event.

5. Be Choosy When Enjoying Holiday Foods

Having diabetes means you need to follow a very healthy eating plan, one with little to no sugar, bread, pasta, rice or white potatoes. But that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a holiday meal! Instead of filling up on crackers, breads and cookies, look for special holiday treats that are still good for your body — fresh fruits, shrimp, deviled eggs, sweet potatoes, salads, baked apples, turkey, beef roast… all can be enjoyed and are healthy for you, too.

6. Remember You’re Human

If you “slip” and indulge in too many holiday sweets, don’t beat yourself up about it. Get back on track the next day and remember that you’re exercising and choosing healthy foods to nourish and support your body.

7. Take a Pass on the Alcohol

Alcohol is a fast-acting sugar. Drinking even moderate amounts of alcohol can lead to increases in your blood sugar while overdoing it can lead to a potentially dangerous blood sugar crash or even dangerous increase in blood sugar. So pass on the spirits and opt for festive non-alcoholic beverages, like seltzer water garnished with citrus wedges, instead.

8. Don’t Skip Meals

Skipping meals can upset your blood sugar levels, leading to low blood sugar. It also makes it more likely that you’ll overeat later or succumb to the temptation of unhealthy food choices. So be sure you continue to plan out your meals and take time to eat healthy all day long.

9. Focus on Family and Friends

The holidays may seem to rotate around food, but really it’s spending time with family and friends that is most important. Keep your focus on what the holidays are really all about and you’ll likely find your stress levels decrease while your enjoyment increases.

10. Plan Fun Holiday Activities

There are many holiday activities that don’t focus on food, so be sure you’re enjoying them. Caroling, ice skating, walking around your neighborhood to view lights and decorations, sledding, tree trimming, sitting in front of your fireplace reading stories and more can be enjoyed by all members of your family.

11. Learn to Make Diabetes-Friendly Recipes

You can still take part in holiday baking traditions by modifying existing recipes to be diabetes friendly, or finding new diabetic recipes to make into a tradition. Along with making these recipes to enjoy with your own family, bring along your favorite dish or two to dinner parties or other events so you’ll have a healthy choice to nibble on. (recipes can be found on our website drcredeur.com)

12. Avoid or Manage Your Trigger Situations

Do you know you’ll have a hard time passing up dessert? Grab a friend or family member and go for a brisk walk instead of lingering at the table after dinner. Do you have a hard time making healthy choices at buffets? Fill your plate with veggies and lean protein first so you won’t have room for extra refined carbs or sweets.

13. Get Plenty of Sleep

Too many late nights or sleepless nights can influence your hunger levels, your willpower and also your mood. Regular, high-quality sleep will help you to keep an optimistic, healthy outlook while giving you the energy you need to keep exercising and enjoying holiday events.

14. Have Healthy Outlets to Deal With Stress

If you’re feeling overwhelmed be sure to take time out for relaxation, whether that’s taking a long soak in the tub, chatting with a friend or zoning out with a good book. When you become overly stressed not only does your physical health suffer, but also you’ll be more likely to reach for sugar and carbs as a pick-me-up. Keeping your stress levels under control will make your diabetes much easier to manage, so make regular relaxation a priority.

15. Stay Positive

The holidays come only once a year, so even if you’re feeling stressed out and mentally taxed by all the demands on your willpower, remember that they’re only here for a short time. Try to keep your mind in the present moment and enjoy each day as it comes. Find something each day to smile about and even jot down a journal of all that you are thankful for.

And remember, these are tips you can use not only during the holiday season but into the New Year and beyond, too.

The Future Tells a Christmas Story

We always had dinner on Christmas Eve and only then would my father bring out his time machine.

He rolled it in on a cart each year and would set it up next to the dining room table. He would invite each of us, starting with the youngest, to step up to the glass of wine he would set in front of the strangely mottled image. We would close one eye and get as close to the wine glass as possible following our father’s incantations about how his time machine had been passed from generation to generation and how it opened a window into the future for a very short time each Christmas eve.

I watched each year as my brothers and sisters stepped up for their peek through the glass into the screen our father chose for them, the younger ones screaming with delight as they received hints about the gifts of the future that would be waiting for them under the tree on Christmas morning and the older ones giggling in spite of knowing something about the illusion of it all.

The rule was that you had to do something to help the future. It couldn’t happen by itself. and it needed your help. Our Father was careful to explain this each year. Each year I would understand a little bit more of the explanation, but for the longest time, all I ever understood was the part where he said that we had to help the future by dreaming about it. Sometime after I got older, I heard him say that we had to be patient too. The following year, I heard him say that we might have to do something to help our future all year long. That was a conceptual stretch for a six year old, but I heard it repeated year after year after that.

On the last Christmas Eve that I spent with my father, I was a little disappointed that the future’s message had nothing to do with the sweater and book that were under the tree for me that year. I always got a kick out of the connection. I was disappointed in the book too. Which is to say that I didn’t read past the first few pages. That is, until one Christmas years later I found the book again.

There, in my father’s cockeyed style, was a circled paragraph.

Holding the glass to the light, he said, “I’ve had a rich and full life. My family and friends have fulfilled me more than I believed possible. And now, after all is done, I can tell you that, as much as I enjoyed my job, my position, my house and all the rest; they were simply a means to keep us all warm, dry, fed and comfortable. They were never the reason for my being”.

On that last Christmas Eve with my father, all those years ago, this is what the time machine told me.

No matter how elaborate the glass might be, it’s the contents that matter most.

Tips For Making Sure You Are Ready For Christmas

As Christmas begins to get nearer you need to start putting together a list of the different things you will need to buy ahead of the big day. When it comes to gifts you will probably leave this till later in the Autumn. Buying gifts can be left to the last minute but it is usually a good idea to get other essential Christmas items before hand. A lot of people will want to buy their essentials for Christmas well in advance, many shops realise this and start putting out their Christmas stock well in advance to meet demands. Whether you are one of these people or not then you should consider looking at getting some of these products in time for Christmas.

One thing that really makes Christmas is having a tree in the corner of the room that you can all gather around on Christmas morning. You might like the idea of having a real tree but they can be a lot of effort to take care of and to dispose of when after Christmas. This is what makes artificial Christmas trees so popular as you don’t need to constantly clear up needles that have fallen off and you can reuse them year after year. There are a number of additional advantages to choosing artificial Christmas trees. You will find that there is a wide range of colours available so you can choose whether you want red, black or white Christmas trees for your home. You will also find fibre optic Christmas trees that have lights already built into them and that will flash on and off in different colours. Choosing fibre optic trees means that you don’t have to buy a set of lights for them and they look great.

One of the must have items for the holiday season are Christmas hampers. They come packed full of different goodies for all ages. You could go for a traditional Christmas hamper, which is full of wine, shortbread, cakes and of course, mince pies. Children of all ages will love a Christmas hamper filled with sweets and it is possible to get sweet hampers with a mix of classic sweet shop favourites and new contenders. If cheese and crackers is more your thing then you will find a wide selection available with different wines, cheeses and crackers. The variety of Christmas hampers available means they are perfect to send as corporate gifts as well as for your family. A lot of businesses and organisations send gifts to their suppliers and clients and hampers are a great way of improving business relationships. Sending them is a nice way of saying thank you for hard work or to smooth over slightly rocky relationships.

Most people enjoy sending and receiving Christmas cards and send them to their friends and family every year. Getting all of your cards and envelopes written up can take so much time that it is a good idea to buy your chosen cards and get them delivered well before. You can also use this past time as a way to donate money to a good cause by buying charity Christmas cards for your chosen charity. If you are interested in purchasing cards for your favourite charity then make sure you look on the back to find out what percentage of the cost goes to the charity. This is why many people decide to buy their cards straight from the charity that they want to support to make sure that they get the most amount of money.
