Tips to Avoid the Pitfalls of Christmas Shopping

Shopping for Christmas gifts can either be pleasurable or stressful and the deciding factor is most often centered on knowing what to get for your loved ones, or if you are just meander pointlessly in a quest for inspiration. Hence, to shun yourself from stress, a so-called “prior gift planning” pays dividends and assts in the reduction of the holiday stress that you must cope with.

It certainly helps to begin your Christmas shopping conquest by preparing a detailed list of those people you want to buy presents for. It fixates the mind and will also benefit you in terms of budgeting. As soon as you know the number of your recipients, you can then apportion the funds accordingly. At this point, you will have a better idea of the type of presents you should be looking for. Moreover, you will have a rough estimation or price range for each item on your list. It isn’t acquisitive at all to consider this. Besides, it is rational and practical measure, as that joy that radiates from Christmas can even make the most penny-wise person lose control of his/her finances festive months.

Once the budget is settled, it is wiser to not set off to buy the presents until you have a few ideas for each recipient. Even if you are planning to complete your shopping offline, utilize the internet to search Christmas gift sites to have an idea of what can be purchased and just what the price ranges are. If you feel comfortable with online shopping, you can save a large amount of time and at the same time open up a world of gifts that you may not have given notice. To minimize postage fees, check out items for the entire gift list before making orders because some of these presents may be ordered from the same company.

To determine what gifts to check out, do a careful analysis of each recipient and what you know about their personalities. An important rule to remember is to get them gifts that they are sure to appreciate, rather than something you like yourself!

Begin your thoughts on those you know well. This will be much easier and the ideas that spark may aid you in thinking of things for those you find it harder to buy gifts for. If you happen to know someone very well, avoid gifts for the home, as personal fondness vary a lot in this area. A lavish treat or ‘occasion’ present can be an awesome choice though, as they don’t demand the recipient to put them on display for a long time months to avoiding hurting your feelings. Say you know someone who likes to cook, a gift basket of exotic spices and cooking oils will likely be well received, plus your recipient need not be a chocoholic to admire a the beauty of a handmade Belgian chocolates, so these kinds of make gift ideas make great choices.

In spite of our digital awareness, traditional pastimes such as board games still provide great pleasure whenever received as a Christmas present and fit well for friends and relatives. In addition, these make fabulous shared presents for a couple or family.

Lastly, still part of your gift planning, whenever there is a possibility that you might perhaps be invited to visit friends over the holidays that you haven’t seen for some time, consider buying small token gift items such as books, wine, or tree decors. Have these wrapped with a blank gift tag. In this way, you will always be prepared to offer a little gift if you need it unexpectedly.

Anniversary Party for Newlyweds

They say that Anniversary parties should get more and more elaborate as you gain more and more years in your marriage. Though who says you have to stay with convention? You’re young, newly married and have survived to the one year or even five year mark. In today’s world with rising divorce rates that can be a big accomplishment. So go ahead and throw yourselves a lavish wedding anniversary party. This can be even more special if you didn’t get to have much of a wedding celebration. Why you might even consider renewing your vows.

Since you are newlyweds you can take advantage of your youthful energy to plan an unusual anniversary. Maybe you can invite your guests to come on a river rafting trip or take the plunge and go bungee jumping? If you do decide to do one or the other or both make sure someone have a camera going to record these memories forever.

After everyone is done risking their lives, feed them and feed them lots of good foods. Anniversary themed paper supplies can make the party very easy to clean up after a hectic day, so look into getting some classy silver or gold colored plates, cups, napkins and a tablecloth. To make the anniversary even more fun, you can toast everyone with LED light up wine glasses. They’ll light up the night when the sun goes down and your guests are still celebrating. Later, you can just let the guests take them home as special party favors.

If you do want to give out something more to the guests for anniversary party favors nothing beats small trinkets. They are easy to carry and can fit into a small bag. Candles are probably the least expensive and personalized items like card decks, key chains and pens the more expensive gifts.

How to Learn From Others

As a fan of creative communication and problem solving, I enjoy paying tribute to other people’s cool ideas. I don’t know always know exactly who I’m honoring with the examples below, but here are 5 Cool Ideas that rock.

1. Customers love to have a choice.
Their are two main ways to navigate the Dallas-Fort Worth airport by car. You can go around it at no cost and it will cost you a few minutes or you can drive through and it will cost you a few bucks. You may not be a fan of tolls, but you’ve got to admit this is a clever way to create revenue.

2. Creative ideas make people smile.
There’s an enterprising shoeshine man at the Gaylord Texan Resort. He offers three price points for his simple service, all with glamorous names. Not one of them is called the “basic shine.” The most expensive shine gets you a glass of wine. Now, that’s creative marketing!

3. Avoid “tradition unimpeded by progress.”
Have you noticed that many t-shirts no longer have a label sewn into the back of the neck? Instead, the garment information is screened into the fabric. Brilliant! Cereal boxes are now missing the expensive tongue-in-groove box top in favor of a less expensive tuck-in flap.

4. Old service models can almost always be improved.
TSA at some airports have figured out how to free the bottleneck in security lanes by having two conveyor belt lines share a metal detector walkway. This is less expensive because TSA uses less personnel and less equipment. It’s faster for us, too.

5. Create products and services from thin air.
A while back, I spoke at a conference where a woman took several excellent photographs of me. The shots were posted on a board later and a single snapshot was priced at $7. I asked why the pic was so expensive and was told that I was purchasing the photograph and the rights to it. Clever!

A Few Different Takes on Father’s Day Gifts

Mrs Grace Golden Clayton. Not only did this lady boast quite a name, she’s also the individual who gave us the first Father’s Day. Laid on in Fairmont, West Virginia on July 5th 1908, it was organised to celebrate the lives of 210 dads who’d died in a mining disaster several months earlier. Fast forward 100-odd years and the modern Father’s Day is really just an excuse to say thanks and spoil your old man. And why not? Trouble is, dads aren’t always the easiest people to buy for. Ask them for a few ideas and you’d do well to get anything beyond a new set of secateurs. Luckily, help is at hand. Get online and you’ll find a whole range of presents for dads that take care of every occasion, from birthdays and Christmas to Father’s Day gifts. It’s the latter that we’re focussing on here, so take a look below and you’ll find just a few ideas for Father’s Day gifts.

Champagne and Wine Gifts

Most dads love a little tipple, so what could be better than picking him up a personalised bottle of wine, Champagne or whisky? As you’d expect, the wine comes in red, white and rosé, while the whisky is available in a single malt or a blend. With all of them, including the Champagne, you can pick from loads of labels and personalise it with a name and message. On top of that, there’s the option of packing it up in a nice satin-lined box, or going the whole hog and buying the booze with an original newspaper from a date of your choice.

Sports Gifts

If your dad’s a sports fan, you’re job is actually a very easy one. Football, in particular, makes a gift for Father’s Day a real piece of cake. One popular option is a football club book, which is made up of tabloid reprints from his team’s finest moments – often going back to the early 20th century and finishing up at the end of last season. Cup Final DVDs are a cheaper alternative, while personalised footie calendars, diaries, mugs and spoof newspaper covers are also a fun possibility. Some of the bigger clubs also offer stadium tours and hospitality packages.

Gift Experiences

For more adventurous dads, you could do far worse that treating them to an experience day. The list of to-dos goes on forever and includes everything from dinner-and-theatre deals in the West End, to clay pigeon shooting and cocktail master classes. Two especially popular options are driving experience days and flying gift experiences. In terms of the driving, you can take your pick from Audis, Ferraris and Astons among others, while the flying days cover off microlight, helicopter and small aircraft flights, as well as acrobatic thrills and spills.

Other Personalised Father’s Day Gifts

If the suggestions so far haven’t quite hit the mark, you’ll still find a number of fun ideas that might just do the trick. Personalised classics allow you to replace the lead characters in books such as Dracula, Hound of the Baskervilles and Frankenstein with your own names. And you’ve also got numerous opportunities to engrave things like hip flasks and cufflinks. You can even find jigsaws that come with a personalised picture.

Unusual Ideas for a Bridal Shower

How many times have you been to a bridal shower with the same appetizers, the same too-sweet punch, the same games, and the same boring time? Why not kick things up a bit for the next bride-to-be? Get her out of the house, away from the bow bouquet, and into something fabulous, unusual, unique, and memorable.

Here are some unusual ideas for a bridal shower.

Wine and Cheese Party

Treat the bride-to-be like a queen for a day with a unique wine and cheese party. Have a variety of white and red wine and several cheeses to pair up with them. This is a great icebreaker for your guests and they’ll be able to mingle and taste and compare wines and talk about favorites. Invited the wine steward or bartender from your favorite restaurant to help out and do a tasting. Ask someone from the grocery store deli to talk about the cheese. Totally play it up. Any good cheese tasting should have a soft cheese (like a brie), a hard cheese (like a cheddar, gruyere, gouda), and a bleu cheese (like a stilton). Toss in some crackers French bread, and grapes and you’ve got a bridal shower everyone will remember.

Spa Shower

Okay, who doesn’t like a mani or a pedi or even a facial or massage? Arrange for a small group of your friends to spend a girls’ day at the spa. See if the location will offer a group discount or special rates, as well as extras like champagne, strawberries, or a large room where everyone can be together. It’s all about pampering and relaxation and bonding.

Scrapbooking Shower

If you’re on a budget and don’t have much to spend on your friend’s bridal shower, consider a scrapbooking shower where guests can help the bride-to-be gather her cherished memories together on one place. Ask your guests to bring scrapbooking supplies (glue, colored paper, scissors, pens, etc.) and any mementos or memorabilia she might have pertaining to her connection with the bride. Work together during the party to put this scrapbook together and present to the guest of honor at the end. The chances of the bride leaving with dry eyes are slim.

Sleepover Shower

Some of the best times growing up were spending the night over at a girlfriend’s house and staying up all night talking about boys, chowing down on snacks, watching movies, and getting very little sleep. Who says you have to be a teenager to have a sleepover? Pick up cookies to bake, popcorn to pop, junk food to get you through the night and invite guests and the bride-to-be over for an all-nighter of movies, fun, and boy chat. Watch chick flicks and lounge around in your pajamas. This will be one party that no one will forget.

Ideas For A Winter Wedding: Location, Decorations and Menu

While the weather may be unpredictable during the winter months, there are still a lot of benefits to having your wedding ceremony during the off-season. To ensure a successful wedding, whether it’s slightly cold or below freezing outside, it’s important to plan for the unexpected weather and come up with ways to counteract potential obstacles. The following are some helpful ideas for a winter wedding that will make your special day that much better.

Wedding Location:

• Warm the guests. Finding a warm wedding venue is essential. After all, you don’t want your guests to complain about how cold your wedding was.

• Utilize a fireplace: For an intimate wedding, a quant inn with a beautiful fireplace may be a nice location or you could choose a rustic log cabin with rock and warm fireplaces as the sites.

Decorations:

• Use an umbrella. During the wedding ceremony, you could use an umbrella to add a romantic, yet practical touch. It will not only make your ensemble unique, but it will also help shield you from any gusts of wind or tinges of chills if your wedding is outside.

• Choose alternative flowers. Although fall and winter seasons boast colorful fresh flowers, the kind you want may not be in season. Depending on your budget, it may be best to go with an alternative to flowers. You could use pine cones, white branches, little berries, etc. to make your wedding stand out while still maintaining the winter theme.

• Warm décor. Fill the room with light by arranging pillar candles on a bed of pine branches or with floating tea light candles in water with red berries. These simple touches will make a huge impression on your guests.

The Menu:

• Warm drinks. Drinks like hot cocoa, apple cider, and coffee cocktails will help keep your guests warm and happy. Also consider serving eggnog, spiced wine, or hot chocolate (alcoholic or non-) as special treats.

• Holiday favorites: You can have all of your favorite food but add some winter touches like a squash dish, or warm pumpkin soup.

Remember to remain optimistic. While there may be some disadvantages to a winter wedding, the outcome will be absolutely stunning if you put forth the effort. If you want your wedding to stand out and be memorable, then a winter wedding can be a great way to do something new and different. With fewer social commitments during the winter season, you may even have more friends and family available to go than you would during the summer months, which will make your wedding that much more special.

Do You Suffer from SAHGS? Stay at Home Guilt Syndrome

It seems there is a disorder for everything today. Here’s one you may suffer from without even knowing it – S.A.H.G.S. (Stay at Home Mom Guilt Syndrome).

I have a pretty severe case of SAHGS. It flared up at 5:10 this morning when my three year old daughter happily pranced into my bedroom. “Mommy, it’s not morning-time yet, but sometimes we get up in the dark and eat candy…don’t we?” “No, we don’t…Jenna”. It was too late. She’d snuck out of bed and devoured at least a half-dozen malted milk balls that I’d left on the counter last night following my own midnight binge.

She was flying high on sugar-frenzy and the sun hadn’t even risen yet. By the time my husband and son woke up (three hours later) she’d colored on our walls, fed play-dough to the dog, spilled dog food all over our laundry room, smashed an egg on the counter, and single-handedly destroyed her bedroom and playroom.

By the time normal people were just pulling into a rush hour traffic jam, I was completely frazzled. I begged my husband, “can I please go to work for you? please, please please….”. He is a police officer and I’ve never, ever envied his job. However, today was one of those days where I would have been thankful to trade two hyper-active preschoolers for a few gun-toting criminals.

He laughed. “Hang in there…I’ll give you a hand when I get home, I promise.” My horrible day continued. When my daughter crashed from her sugar high she cried hysterically (and for no apparent reason). “Mommy…I don’t like spiders, they are soooooooo icky” she wailed. Mind you, there wasn’t a spider in sight. She was completely losing it. My son (as always) followed suit. “Mommy…spiders…scary”. He screamed.

After about three dozen nonsensical, hysterical outbursts later, I had one of my own. I called my husband at work. “I am losing it….I need chocolate, wine and cheetos…stop at the store and get all three…or else”.

When my husband got home from work he handed me my vices and helped me put the kids to bed. As soon as the house was quiet, he offered to put away laundry and wash the dinner dishes. “No, I’ll take care of it…just go ahead and relax”.

“What is wrong with me?” I wondered. As much as I was desperate for his help, I couldn’t (and wouldn’t) accept it. “I am a just a stay-at-home mom and he works twelve hour shifts.” “He shouldn’t have to come home from work and clean up the train-wreck of a home we’d created”, I thought.

I am driving myself crazy. I am a staunch believer that the effort a Stay-at-Home mom’s “job” ( if you will) is equivalent to having two full-time careers. A few years ago I attended graduate school while working full-time as a social worker. Frankly, being a SAHM was twice as hard as trying to juggle both.

So why can’t I convince myself to accept help? Because I suffer from a disabling case of Stay at Home Guilt Syndrome. While I am extremely proud of the effort I put into cleaning our home and caring for the children, I haven’t quite accepted the fact that I am contributing just as much as my husband and that sometimes, I need to “clock out” too.

“So, where does the guilt stem from?” I wondered. I discussed it with a fellow SAHM friend of mine who had the same concerns. “It’s all about the paycheck”, she replied sarcastically. “BINGO…that’s it”, I laughed.

Even though I know how hard I work all day, I don’t have a paycheck to prove it. In fact, a CSI agent would be hard-pressed to find evidence that I’d even lifted a finger on an average day. My house is fairly clean when my husband leaves for work in the morning yet twelve hours later it looks like the Tasmanian devil just spun through it. (Okay, make that two Tasmanian devils).

Lately, I’ve been so guilt-ridden that I find myself giving him the play-by-play the moment he walks into the door…

“I know it doesn’t look like I did much today…but I did the dishes – twice, I scrubbed nail polish off of the bathroom floor, I vacuumed up cheerios, picked peanut butter out of the dog’s hair and popped the heads back onto all of the baby dolls and Barbies. I pulled a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle out of the toilet and sprayed the sidewalk chalk off of the mini-van. ” “I know I didn’t finish dinner, the dishes or laundry, but I did manage to scrape dog poop off of five pairs of sneakers too.”

So, what’s the treatment for SAHGs? A paycheck. For every nose I wipe, I get two bucks. For every argument I break up, I get three. For every nasty thing I have to wipe, pick or scrape off of the carpet…an automatic ten dollar bonus. Every time the kids have a sick day, I get one too. Whenever my job starts before the sun rises, I am going to give myself overtime pay – a latte, a massage or just a really long, hot bath. I am going to pay myself fifteen dollars for each episode of Dora I have to suffer hrough and twenty for every episode of the Wiggles (twenty five when I sing along). A potty training course is worth $500 and the first day of kindergarten is worth a grand. I am paying myself two bucks for every bath and diaper change. I get ten dollars for every trip to the park, library, playdate, and music class.

When all is said and done, I am fairly certain I still won’t be paid what I am worth. However, the next time my husband offers to help clean the house, wash the dishes or finish the laundry I am going to proudly hand him my paycheck and reply, “certainly!”

New Wine in an Old Bottle

For a person of spirit, every day is a New Year’s Day. For a normal person, the most important thing to be remembered on this day is to give a new start to the old life. It is like new wine in an old bottle. The foremost thing of remembrance to lead a new life is-

Never waste your time brooding over the past or in anticipating the future. Only the present is real and permanent and so is called omnipresent. The past is past; we cannot get it back how much ever we strive for it. Time is like Death; not even one wasted minute adds up to the clock of your Life. The future is hidden in the womb of time. It is not possible to visualize it. Therefore, only the present is important. Realize this truth and do not worry about the past or the future. But in practice how to live in the present when our lives are busy thinking of the past and future, so think many logical minds.

When you are leading your lives, it is very common for the thoughts of past or future to come across. It all happens very suddenly. It is then you have to control your thoughts and force or tame them to divert and concentrate on the present work. As you start diverting your mind every moment, your thoughts keep themselves under control. It may be tough but never impossible.

Another way to give a good start to your lives is to start your day with a noble thought. Start off with World Peace Prayer thus- ‘Let the whole world rest in peace.’ Only when the world is happy, can you be happy. As soon as you wake up, spare at least few seconds to utter this prayer. The results are unimaginable. You fail to realize the greatness and power of this prayer but it is true that your prayers bring great results and for sure this Earth would turn into a Kingdom of Peace.

Before eating food, offer the same to the Lord. It is a way of conveying gratitude in words. At least have a heart to say ‘Thanks’ to the Lord for blessing us with food. There are thousands of beings with no good food. Pray to the Lord that the hunger of every being be satisfied to the fullest.

Always engage yourselves in service or good deeds. When I was a student, one of my New Year resolutions was to be of help to at least one person in a day. God will help you live up to your resolutions when you entertain noble thoughts. When you make it a habit, you will be helping every day and imagine the satisfaction you derive when you help all the 365 days. God will then take pride in you. Happiness cannot be obtained out of happiness. Only through suffering and sacrifice can happiness be achieved. You will be called true human beings only when you have compassionate hearts. Whatever service you undertake with a compassionate heart, it becomes sanctified. It then transforms itself from ‘service to man’ to service to God.

The best way not to be cheated by others is to believe in the quote of a great person.

“Believe not all what you hear; believe only half of what you see.”
This concept will free you from misconceptions and misunderstandings. God is your only true friend who stands by you at all times be it good or bad. He alone is permanent in your impermanent life. The joy you derive when you love God for love sake is immeasurable.

Develop the faith that whatever happens is for your own good even when you face any difficulty or suffering. During the difficult times, you feel you are cursed but as the days pass on revealing the message and the hard lessons, it is then you grow higher and higher, further and farther. Consider the human being standing in front of you as an embodiment of divinity. See God in every being. If you are hurt by some one, force yourself to see God in him. In tough times, think thus-

“There is God residing in my enemy too; let me not search for the differences.”

Be loving even to your enemy for your enemy is your greatest friend, for he makes you learn bitter lessons in life. On the other hand, if you hate him and talk ill of him, remember you are actually cleansing away his sins with your tongue. The more you talk ill of any person, the more you are cleansing away his sins and the more you are piling up your record of bad actions. There is God watching your every action, listening to your every word, concentrating on your every thought. Let them be noble enough to face divinity. If you can face God, you can face anyone else in the world.

The best way to live a tensionless life is to dedicate all your activities to God. Only then will you attain peace in every possible way. When you view our actions, thoughts and words as offerings to God, you will at least try to discriminate between good and bad. When you have noble thoughts, God or the divinity inside of you will shoulder the responsibility of fulfilling them.

Hence live every moment with devotion to love God all your life. To love God is not to say you love God. You have to live every moment with God. Feel His presence every moment. Speak to Him; share your happiness and joys for He is your true eternal friend. Never expect any return while praying. You often fail to realize that you pray to Him for your own sake and not for the sake of God. Never pray only at certain intervals of time. Prayer should be your very breath. Only then do you experience true divine bliss. God is your only property; with God, everything else is possible.

I pray to the almighty to bless every being on this earth plane with happiness, peace and a heart to love Him selflessly.

“The greatest Philosophy of Life is to dig within one’s own self. Start digging right now.” -Sharmila Sanka
