Medieval Markets in Germany

At various parts of the year a number of towns and cities will have a small medieval market. In late November the city of Nuremberg has the ‘Historischer Katharinenmarkt’. Like all these affairs this particular medieval market is great fun. All the stall holders are in medieval dress which is usually brown and beige woolen clothing often with a hooded cloak and a rope like belt, the recreation society members are all in military attire from the middles ages, chainmail and skirts with swords or spears, they tend to congregate around a wooden fire sitting on crudely made wooden chairs and talking and laughing in a way reminiscent of what it must have been like many centuries ago for the local lord’s retainers to be overseeing a market of the day.

There is usually entertainment at these events, in this case a juggler dressed as a jester and a band, in troubadour outfits, playing lively renditions of medieval tunes on medieval instruments – the drum and bag pipe. Such markets usually have stalls selling mead, monastery brewed ales and berry wines, tipples not often found at beer festivals the rest of the year.

The stalls are also an interesting feature of these markets, although some are the familiar wooden huts of the more common beer fests, most are colourful tents, more like pavilions, in fact, of the type we are used to seeing in Robin Hood movies of the 1960s from America, with pointed tops and flowing sides. Many of the wares on offer at these stalls are also surprising. There is usually a fortune teller at the market who does palmistry and tarot cards; you can get a scroll with your family name and its history, or buy a hand-crafted bow or a blacksmith forged sword. A stall selling armour is often present at these fairs as are stalls selling medieval costumes and woolen cloaks. There are herb and spice stalls, a bakery selling freshly baked bread from an on site wood stoked oven and a stall selling drinking horns.

Children are also catered for with one or two stalls selling toy wooden swords, bows and shields and even knight helmets. At this particular market there was a large pavilion set up in the Turkish style in which you can drink beer or tea and smoke on water pipes all whilst sat on large cushions at a low set Arabic metal filigreed coffee table. Of course bars abound, what would a medieval market be without stalls to purchase a flagon of ale (some even serve drinks in pewter mugs) or have something to eat. At many of these occasions they roast an entire ox or goat on a spit and slice the meat directly from the roasting beast.

During the market a parade takes place in which the recreation medieval society marches with banners fluttering in the wind, weapons held high, and musicians playing marching music.

Medieval markets have been part of the annual festivities in many German towns for many years and are only recently starting to be held in other countries. The whole thing is an entertaining day out for the whole family and if you get the opportunity I would highly recommend you go to see one.

The Diverse Markets in Melbourne

The city of Melbourne’s life and culture is always described to be rich and interesting. This affluent culture is nonetheless reflected in the diverse kinds of markets or shopping areas. Since there are various ethnic communities and sub-cultures in Melbourne, the city’s glamour and fashion are somewhat a mixture of allure and style. Products, foods and sometimes music comprise the entirety of the market.

The Rose Street Artists Market is one shopping area to look for art and craft products particularly on Saturdays in the unconventional and free area of Fitzroy. This market resembles other similar shopping areas in New York, London and Berlin wherein participating artists directly sell their works to the public. Every Saturday when the market is open, there are about 70 renowned designers and artists who display their works of art and ingenuity. Each year, more than 400 of these artists contribute to the market who offer high quality and distinct work of Art. Aside from artistic creations, there are also gourmet cafes providing lunch and coffee and live entertainment shows to watch and listen.

The Camberwell Sunday Market is a place to see if you are on the lookout for quality pre-owned items. Behind the main street shops is a car park where this market is held. From this market you will find some second hand designer items and clothing as well as house wares ranging from collectibles, jumbles, recycled and vintage pieces.

The Queen Victoria Market completes the city of Melbourne. This market holds its operation on the original city market buildings that were built during the early days of 1840. In this bazaar place you will find and buy some fresh foods like meat, fish, fruits and vegetables. There are also European cheeses, sausages, breads and other delicatessen. Basically, retailers in this Vic Market offers items at discounted and bargain prices, even those didgeridoo, sporting memorabilia, Italian designer bags or leather jackets. Night Markets are also held in this Vic Market every Wednesday night from December to February. Aside from the already mentioned goods, Vic Market has live entertainment, natural health and crafts stalls, foods and wines places.

The Esplanade Market is located in St. Kilda and is one among the great markets to visit in Melbourne especially on a good and perfect-weathered Sunday. Being on a walkway location, this market is a perfect hangout and shopping area before or after a relaxing walk on the beach. There are roughly 200 artists and crafts people who display their original works comprised of handmade artworks, woodworks, glass, paper, resin, and even recycled works.

The St. Andrew’s Market is dubbed as an alternative market that holds operation every Saturdays. The highlights of this market are handmade and home grown produces. Composed of Chai tent and jammed people taking a look at displayed goods ranging from tie-died clothing, elegant jewelries, toys and plants and other sold items perfect as gifts and treats.

The Bridge Road Richmond is perfect for budget shopping for some branded goods like Sportsgirl, Witchery, Esprit, Nine West and other locally known clothing labels. My Gastronomy Favourites in Spain

I feel privileged to live in Spain, I appreciate the Spanish traditions and customs and more importantly enjoy the culinary delights the Mediterranean diet has to offer.

Food has always been a passion of mine, I may not be the greatest of cooks, but I am very lucky to have a husband who loves to potter in the kitchen and rustle up lovely dishes from around the world.

What do I love most about the food in Spain? I am not sure I can answer the question in one sentence. Well, it’s not just the food, it is a combination of things, it is the atmosphere in the tapas bar, the locals with their families and the pleasure of three or four generations eating together, enjoying each others company and appreciating the food they are sampling. I love the variety, the freshness of the local produce, the flavour and aromas of the food and of course the taste.

I feel very strongly that I should support the local farmers by purchasing as much as I can from the town and village markets. I can attend a marketplace everyday of the week if I need too and the selection of food available is amazing.

My favourite by far, is the fresh fruit and vegetables, the displays piled high with seasonal delights and the quality and size of the produce is remarkable. Add the hustle and bustle, sampling the stall holders goods, the friendly locals and the mornings transform into an experience rather than a boring shopping trip to the supermarket.

Other culinary delights on offer range from the olive stall, with a large selection of green and black olives stuffed with a variety of anchovy, garlic and nuts. Onions large and small, gherkins or cornichons of every size and shape, some on sticks served in a selection of different oils and vinegars. Freshly cooked chickens prepared with garlic and herbs and roasted slowly in front of you, gorgeous and very fattening cakes and freshly baked bread all tempting you to buy. An array of spices as well as local honey, smoked and salted fish, Iberico hams and a selection of cheeses sold from the deli vans. I always buy too much. Mmmm.

Bread is a favourite ingredient in the Spanish diet and our village baker drives his delivery van through the streets every morning, tooting his horn, almost calling us to meet him on the street corner, to look at his wares and buy whatever takes our fancy. Bocadillos (rolls) are a great lunchtime snack, no butter, just filled with delicious Iberico ham and cheese, especially good when the bread has just been baked and delivered almost to my door. No one would consider serving a meal in Spain without the inclusion of bread.

I cannot talk about the wonderful Spanish food I love and not mention the favourite of all favourites, TAPAS. What an amazing way to eat! The table is filled with an assortment of dishes, shared with loved ones, and usually eaten in a local bar with a glass of wine and water. Tapas does vary from region to region and traditional recipes are handed down through families, generation to generation. What strikes me is the passion and love that they manage to infuse into their food.

Some of my bite size favourites consist of albondigas en salsa (hot meatballs in a tomato sauce), patatas bravas (cubes of potatoes coated in a spicy tomato sauce), tortilla, ensalada de marisco (seafood salad), almendras (almonds), chorizo (hot spicy sausage), I could go on and on, my mouth is beginning to water already. I nearly forgot to mention anchovies in olive oil, fantastic.

The variety of fresh fish and seafood available throughout the country denotes the taste and quality and the importance placed within the Mediterranean diet. My preference is to visit my local fishmonger, let them demonstrate their skills in preparing my choice and listen with glee to their recommended cooking techniques. Freshly picked lemons compliment the delicate flesh and a little garlic and aromatic olive oil complement the base to many dishes.

The raw ingredients for paella begin with rice, oil, saffron and a shallow double handed pan with a heat source that will allow even heat distribution. Depending on the region, family recipe and the produce available, the dish may vary with rabbit, chicken, snails, crayfish and seafood, asparagus and vegetables being added.

Traditionally eaten outdoors, the men take charge, guests huddle around a table and the paella is served in the pan in which it is cooked. Each person is armed with a wooden spoon and eats the section that is in front of them. A very sociable and enjoyable meal that usually takes hours to prepare.

Lunchtime is another social event in many mars and restaurants with the service of Menu del Dia or meal of the day. Usually a two or three course meal, very reasonably priced, accompanied with house wine and bread and finished with a siesta before returning to work.

With so many bars and restaurants, the opportunity to sample local house specialities never ceases to amaze me. Business, friendship and spending time with your family can be cemented by a gastronomic feast, A much-loved pastime I can never grow tired of.

Shopping and Sightseeing in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi

Vietnam is rapidly opening up to the outside world and the opportunity to visit while it is still true to its cultural identity is a must for all modern day explorers. Stretching the length of the Indochinese Peninsula, Vietnam reaches from the north, with its alpine peaks and Red River Delta, through the central high temperate plateaux down to the Mekong River in the south, with its modern life in Ho Chi Minh city. A twin-center holiday is a great way to see both sides of Vietnam’s unique culture and heritage.

Flights to Ho Chi Minh, formerly known as Saigon and now affectionately known as HCMC, are frequent from all over the world. Expect to be surprised by this multi-cultural city with its Asian and french-inspired cuisine, thousands of motorbikes and Ben Thanh Market, which is anything but Communist in its entrepreneurial activity. One of 40 markets in the city which have sprung up to accommodate traders who cannot afford the high commercial rents, this is the market to visit. Hundreds of vendors create a narrow maze of stalls selling everything from cobra wine and fine silk fabric to the latest Japanese gadgets. Haggling is fierce but you will end up with a bargain, even if you have paid more than the locals for your booty.

Wherever you choose to stay, a visit to the Rex Hotel’s rooftop bar is a must for all westerners. Once the gathering place for ex-pats and wartime journalists, it continues to be the city’s most popular watering hole complete with decorative fairy lights, topiary and singing birds that can barely compete with the lively chatter. From the roof there are great views of downtown Ho Chi Minh.

Getting around is easy using local transport, cyclos, motorbike taxis (helmets are compulsory) or renting your own motorbike for around $3-7 per day. Pick up your free map from the Tourist Information Center, which also covers Hanoi. Other thrills of this buzzing city are the Reunification Palace, which has been left exactly as it was the day Saigon fell to the North Vietnamese. Features include a circular sofa, vintage 1960s paraphernalia and a replica tank on the front lawn. Less entertaining is the War Remnants Museum with some gruesome photographs and exhibits. The Cu Chi tunnels of the Viet Cong can also be explored, although this is not a trip for the claustrophobically inclined.

Pose for a photograph outside the City Hall, next to the statue of Uncle Ho, visit one of the very pleasant pagodas in the city with their gorgeous sculptures or visit the Dai Nam Van Hien Temple in the tourist park which also houses the zoo, shops, hotels and a huge man-made mountain.

At the other end of the country, and quite opposite to Ho Chi Minh City in many ways, is Hanoi. Built by the french, its faded colonial charm is a delight, even though many buildings are in need of a little TLC and a coat of fresh paint. The mazelike Old Quarter of Hanoi is a shopper’s delight. The narrow crowded streets carry the names of the goods – Rice Street, Silk Street and even Pots and Pans Street! Shops are little more than cubby-holes which contain the merchant surrounded by stacks of noodles, antiques, flowers or handicrafts. Other must-see sights in Hanoi are the 900-year old Temple of Literature and the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum. Hanoi offers a feast of gastronomic experiences such as ‘Cha Ca’, a delicious red fish stew served with rice noodles, shrimp sauce, fried peanuts and pickled vegetables. Bon appetit!
